One day a hare met a turtle next to the river and said:
"Let's race with one another! As a reward to the winner will be a basket of ripe fruits. And we'll put it on a distant hill. And the one who succeeds, will eat up the fruits."
The turtle considered the offer for some time and finally agreed.
And so they filled the basket with fruits to the brim, put it on the top of a distant hill, and came back to the river.
"Run!" commanded the hare and began splitting his sides laughing. Because it knew well that it can run much faster than the turtle. And the turtle knew either that it would never catch up with the hare. Nevertheless it hurried its best towards the distant hill.
In the meantime the hare gasping couldn't help laughing and rolling around on the grass. In the end, as the hare had caught its breath, it saw the turtle climbing up the distant hill. Now the hare ran to the hill as fast as it could. But, alas, it was too late for the hare. As it reached up the top of the hill, the turtle had been already eating the ripe fruits.
How did that happen?
The turtle went to its aim without stopping. Whereas the hare was lying on the grass bragging. To a braggard one, even one's long legs won't do much good.
