Starchevsky, Schliemann and Ponomarev. A culturological note about the Valentin Pikul's story "How to get into the encyclopedia?".

Albert Vikentyevich Starchevsky is the author of the Dictionary of the Ancient Slavic Language. This Dictionary was mentioned in my essays.

I found biographical material about Starchevsky on the Internet.

A man of great learning (of Polish origin). Two universities and so on... He dreamed that Russian people could communicate with the inhabitants of any country in the world with the help of his "Hundred-language Dictionary".

He was famous not for his dreams, but for his huge contribution to Russian culture.

In particular, he was the first initiator who managed in Russia to compose in full, to pass (to escort) through censorship, to publish and to successfully distribute the encyclopedia.

('Kray's Reference Encyclopedic Dictionary (edited by Starchevsky) is a Russian universal (covering the entire range of knowledge about the world and man) encyclopedia in 12 volumes of the publisher Kray; the first complete encyclopedia in Russian. The dictionary was published in St. Petersburg in 1847-1855. ") [unofficial translation]

Starting to read the biographical material, I noticed the year: 1847. And I remembered Schliemann. Perhaps Schliemann was related to Starchevsky or to the encyclopedia?

The material mentioned the story by Valentin Pikul "How to get into the encyclopedia?".

I found this story and read it.

This is one of those works that is dedicated to Russian culture - to a specific person, the initiator of the encyclopedia, and to the process of publishing the encyclopedia.

  It's interestingly written.

From Valentin Pikul, I learned that at the time of the complete lack of funds for the continuation of the publication of the encyclopedia, Starchevsky received part of the inheritance from Prokofy Ivanovich Ponomarev. It seems that this is the same Ponomarev, whom Igor Bogdanov repeatedly mentioned in his books about Heinrich Schliemann.

So, apparently, I was right in my assumptions - perhaps Schliemann had an indirect (through Ponomarev) relation to Starchevsky.

Valentin Pikul concluded his story with a disappointed remark that Albert Starchevsky was not mentioned by modern compilers of encyclopedias in Russian.

Nevertheless, the experience of Albert Starchevsky in the publishing of the Encyclopedia, and the experience of describing this process by Valentin Pikul were interesting to me.
